Calibration failure

Question

Posted (edited)

Hi,

I just bought 3 FGT-001 and installed them in different room. I charged them all and patched them to last available firmware (version 4.5). All have been included in HC2 but none of them succeed in Calibration. They are trying to redo a very noisy calibration every 10 to 20 min... not easy to sleep with it :(

I get this error message: Error occured - head calibration failed. Try again.

2 questions :

- is the noise normal?

- how to get a successful calibration?

Thx for your help

BTW: I do believe that "Occurred" is with 2 "R" :)

Hi! You've send me a PM asking if you could use french here... the answer is no but there is an excellent dedicated forum here:

    Your english is fine.

Let's start by saving you from that noise and put back the old thermostatic heads...

To do that you'll need "#11: Standby Mode" in the manual, I'll paste it here for your convenience and casual forum readers.

In Standby Mode the device is in deep sleep state allowing safe dismounting, transporting and low as possible battery consumption.

    1. use the included key to press and hold the button
    2. Release the button when you see cyan LED colour.
    3. Click the button to confirm the selection.
    4. The motor spins and retracts the actuator.

Now you can store them, ship them, without it ever doing that calibration again.

Always use the "cyan menu" when you want to move/mount/dismount/ship an FGT

Oh ! does it means they are broken and I should request for a new one? I'm a bit surprised that 3 of them  are having the same issue.

No, not broken. Maybe you'll have to return them but not for this reason.

First put them to sleep (standby) to stop the noise and get back some control of your room temperature ;)

Then we can discuss what calibration is, if you want to do that here.

Did you check the french forum?

Yes 2 of them are already in stand-by. I kept only one to continue to do some tests. The room is not occupied.

I understood already many things thanks to this forum. Let's go ahead.

The only thing I haven't been able to solve is the calibration. I started thinking it's due to the plug. I don't have M30 so I used the adaptor but honestly it look like it is not fitting very well. I'm waiting feedback from the plumber about the standard he used. Can it be the issue?

Yes, that is very likely the cause.

Every valve is different. It might also have to do with the age of the valve, it can wear out.

Because all valves are different, the FGT any other Z-Wave thermostat has some sort of "calibration". The distance between the "open" and "close" point (when you press that little pin) varies by model, age, ...

Calibration means: find the "in" and "out" point of that particular valve. If it cannot find that -> calibration failure.

When it retries every 10 minutes it probably cannot determine one of them and it will never work.

When you have it on the radiator and after some random time, hours or even days, it does "calibration" then the valve might be leaking (worn). Sometimes you can find out because in the OFF position the radiator keeps heating (a bit). Not a good thing, but might not immediately cause "calibration failure".

In normal operation, every Wednesday you'll hear the FGT motor spin to prevent the valve from sticking. I think it is, technically speaking, a calibration and as a benefit keeps the valve in working order during long periods of "fully open" or "fully closed". So keep an eye on the status window of your HomeCenter to spot potential calibration failures.
