I assume you have press switches. You can use scene activation instead of associations.

 

Firstly, find the parameter that allows a scene to be activated when you press the button, and set it on both devices.

Then write a scene:

If the light is on, turn it off, else if the light is off, turn it on.

Apply the scene to both switches. How you do this depends on which controller you are using. Can use triggers or central scene ID.
