Motion Sensor Flashing Red

BarneyRubble

Question

The battery in one of my FGMS001 motion sensors recently died.  After replacing the battery my system wouldn't see it.  I have tried the reset procedure multiple times by holding down the button until the LED turns yellow (after purple), releasing the button then pressing once to confirm.  This seems to work,  However, after the reset the LED  starts to slowly flash red.  If I try to go into Inclusion mode by quickly pressing the button 3 times, nothing happens.  Has anyone encountered this?  Is there anything else I can try or is this sensor dead?

Thanks

Depends on what you mean by flashing. It should stop doing that after a few blinks

That is expected, when you reset the device. Manual (firmware dependent but you cannot know the exact version because you cannot add it, they look very similar)

Please login or register to see this link.

"After few seconds the device will be reset, which is signalled with
the red, fading visual indicator colour."

If you insert the battery, RED = no part of a network, GREEN = already added to a network

And when it is operating normally then "Motion Alarm colour will vary depending on the temperature. The colour and the signalling mode can be set in parameter 80."  and the default is "colour is temperature dependent" - if you hold it in your hand for a long time it might be hot enough to blink red-ish.

It might be broken, but that is rare.

Yeah it says three but keep clicking, maybe 10 times, use a rhythm of 2-3 clicks per second.

Bring it to within 2-5 meter of the controller, some models need direct range to get added.

  • Thanks for your reply.

I should have been more clear.  By "flashing", I mean it will slowly pulse red on and off indefinitely.  It never stops.

When it is doing this, it will even interrupt the reset procedure, meaning while holding down the button and the LED turns purple, a red flash will interrupt the transition to yellow and I have to start over.  When I do successfully reset it, after about 10 seconds, the constant red flashing will resume again.  It almost seems like it is telling me "I'm Dead!".

Unfortunately, it doesn't matter how many times I hit the button or how fast, nothing will get it to turn blue or stop the red pulsing.

What do you think?  Is there a way to do a "harder" reset?

Thank you for clarifying that. Indeed, it is not a good sign.

There is still one thing you can try, before declaring this one "dead"...

Any controller can exclude and reset any z-wave device at any time. So put your HCx or whatever controller in "delete" mode (devices tab) like you would if you would want to exclude an existing device. Then perform the "right exclude click sequence" on the device, it is in the manual of that device, it will be the same as the "include" sequence. Many Fibaro devices allow you to use S1 for that, and a (small) button on the device. Do not guess, check the manual! The fact that your current controller might be or might not be the original hub (the one that has included, or had included the device) does not matter. Any controller can exclude and reset any z-wave device at any time.

So in this particular case, you set your HC to delete a Z-Wave device, and on the FGMS keep clicking 10 times.

The countdown timer on the HC should stop counting and saying something about "deleting" or deleted. That would be good.

Again, you may think: "this won't work because the device was already reset" but that does not matter. Please do try it, it will work, I am 100% certain, as long as your device is functional. It is a feature of Z-Wave.

If instead of getting a "deleted" message you see the controller exclusion timer keeps counting down until it times out... the controller did not "hear" the device and something is wrong.

It performs the equivalent of a delete and a factory reset. It might not work IMHO but it does not take a lot of effort to try.

  • I really appreciate your help with this.

Since the exclusion process on the FGMS-001 is the same as the inclusion process, I can't get anywhere.  The motion sensor won't give any acknowledgment that it is in Inclusion or Exclusion mode, it just pulses red.   However I went ahead and tried to delete the sensor from the controller (Z-Way running on a Raspberry Pi) and it just times out.  It looks like something in the sensor is actually dead.  The red pulses must mean something and I'm guessing it is saying that there is a serious problem.

I think the only remaining option is to perform an exorcism.  I have a couple of experienced priests coming to my house this weekend to perform the ceremony.  I will report back with the results!  LOL

    Thanks again
