Cabling my future smart home

Question

Posted (edited)

Hi Guys,

Tldr:

We want the ability to control the lights from the hall ways 1st, 2nd, 3th, 4th floor with light switches on each floor.
But do i understand it correct that a fibaro relay switch can only be controlled with 2 switches?
I found this

Please login or register to see this link.

, that makes me think it is possible?
If i understand it correctly, it acutally means that it is not needed to place a relay behind every switch, but before every light?

also can i use the second switch of a fibaro double switch 2 as a virtual button?
So i don't connect a cable to it, but if i press it, a light goes out (that i configured in homey)?

Long story:
I'm currently starting to cable my new home.
I want to make it (in the future) a smart home.

Given the budget, i would wanne start with a "dumb"/classic house, with a few things that are smart from the beginning (windows shades, few lights smart).
However, the plan is to gradually make the house completly smart.

The things we would want to achieve at "the end" is:

  • All window shutters opening/closing automaticly with light sensors and/or timetables, but also be able to control them "manually" with an app and a switch (for when we want to watch tv and the sun is shining to bright).
  • All window curtains opening/closing automaticly timetables, but also be able to control them "manually" with an app and a switch (for when we want to watch tv and the sun is shining to bright or we want privacy).
  • All lights in the hallways (basement, 1st, 2nd, 3th and 4th floor) and garage to light up automaticly with light sensors and movement sensors (only light up when its "dark enough" and there is movement)
  • All lightbulbs changed with smart light bulbs (so we can control all lights individual, for example in the tv room, there will be 6 lightingpoints connected to 1 switch, but with smart light bulbs we can light up just 1 if needed)
  • A button/nfc tag by the front door and the night stands to put all lights out.
  • Automate the heating
  • Automate airco's
  • Control a few smart plugs
  • Automate the ventilation
  • Control the Robot vacuum
  • Other stuff i'll find when i'm getting addicted to smart home :D

But we want to start with a dumb house and the ability to use the house when the smart things are down (and the ability to resell the house)

The plan is to connect every light with the fuse box with a 5g1,5 cable (5 cables in one tube) and every light switch with a 5g1,5 (i assume that the term 5g1,5 isn't used everywhere in the world).

This way we can install dumb switches (from the brand Niko), given the fact that there are 5 cables to each switch means that i can route the "signal" back to the fuse box and connect the right switch to the right lights in te fuse box.
Somethign like my sketch (the blue is the fusebox, yellow the ligth and gray the switch)

I found the fibaro switches and dimmers, and it seems like they can do what i want.
I want to connect them to a Homey pro hub.

There is only 1 thing i'm not sure about.
We want the ability to control the lights from the hall ways 1st, 2nd, 3th, 4th floor with light switches on each floor.
But do i understand it correct that a fibaro relay switch can only be controlled with 2 switches?

If you guys have any other tips/suggestion, i'm happy to hear them!

Thanks in advance

Hello.

Yes, the cables you label as 5g1.5 are labeled as 5x1.5, but it's easy to guess your intention. 5G is also often referred to as a more mobile connection, i.e. a cable with stranded conductors, which is not very suitable for a fixed installation.

Even using these cables (5 wires) makes the installation more expensive, it gives you a certain flexibility in the future.

I proceeded in the same way during the reconstruction of the electrical installation.

Feel the need for more space in the switchboard. It is convenient to terminate the cabling not directly on the primary circuit breakers, but on the terminal block, where you can connect more efficiently (change the connection).

To the said cable. Don't feel that using a 5x1.5 (5g1.5) cable you have 5 wires available!

You are from Belgium, where there are sites of the TT type, but also TN (TN-C, TN-S, TN--C-S).

This means that you usually use 2 wires for grounding or zeroing protection, with another wire you bring a permanent phase to power the module, and you have two wires for switching.

During the reconstruction, I stretched a shielded SFTP cable 4x2x0.22 (cat 5e) into each switch.

I planned to use multi-button controls, which in conjunction with the SmartImplant modules gives many possibilities.

And yes, by having the 5x1.5 cables stretched to all the boxes with buttons, I started with the conventional electrical installation (ordinary switches, light bulbs came out of the stove,... )... and only later did I buy Fibaro modules..

I'll try to find some old post where I described it.

In Belgium it is really called 5g1,5

I'm indeed also thinking about placing a cat6 to each switch, to be safe for the Future.

I'm not as theoretically (and probably practicly) in electricity as you 😛

So sorry if i ask stupid questions.

I think i'm onboard with the switch 2 and the dimmer modules.

I'm just not experienced enough to be sure if i can link multiple wall switches to 1 light with the fibaro switch.

For example, the light on the first floor should be able to controlled (with a wall switch) from the 1st, 2nd, 3th and 4th floor (also able to work with movement sensors, but thats possible i'm sure off).

And i'm not sure if i could use the second button on a fibaro switch 2 as a "virtual" button, for example, could i wire 1 button to control a light in the hall and the other button i leave unwired but in the homey software i let it control a light in the garden?

    Yes, it is possible.
the ideal connection is in the use of buttons.
Look at the picture, scheme 5 in the manual.

    Yes, it is possible.

You are using scene help control.

thank you so much for your help.
Now that i'm sure that i can connect it this way, i can start placing all the cables :D
