I don't see the point in having a UI with expand/collapse regions if it defaults to expanded. When I land on the web interface, my expectation is to see sections collapsed, if I expand a section I want to see rooms collapsed. Only when I expand a room do I want to see devices.

Just me?

Not for me. I like to see all sections, rooms and devices if I select the whole house. I don't want to do a lot of clicks to see the content.

If I want to see a part of it, like a section or a room, I click on that part in the menu.

But you're happy to scroll? I'm 8 screen-ish of scrolling to get to something in my last section.

If you know you want the see the last section, why don’t you select that section from the menu left? You don’t need to scroll.

    Because I shouldn't have to 🙂

    Also irrelevant for mobile app.

You were writing about the web interface, not the app. I kind of lost you now.

IMO it's a universal UX imperative.

On web you're happy to filter by a left menu, a click. I would prefer collapsed expanders and my click to be spent on expanding a section.

    Horses for courses.

Or from another angle, why have expand/collapse regions if they're only useful when you have to collapse every other region than the one you're interested in?

May as well not have them at all, which is sort of your position? Not going to use them, so be gone with them.
