Motion Sensor for closing awning with movement

Question

Posted

Hi all,

Has anyone tried to use the tamper function (accelerometer) in a motion sensor to retract awnings (big sunscreen) when movement is detected?

We have a very big 7x4 Awning which we can control with a fibaro blinds controller. Officially you are supposed to use a windmeter to make the awning retract when there is too much wind. Alternatively motion sensors are sold which detect motion and would retract in the case of (big) movement. I was thinking to do the same with a motion sensor but am struggeling to get this reliably.

There is a nice cavity in the part of the sunscreen that moves out to hide a motion sensor. I think I would take it out in winter. I’m just struggling with a reliable scene to make this work. Anybody have any experience with this?

You could technically use the tamper/accelerometer for this, but it might be tricky to get it reliable since wind vibration patterns can vary a lot. You’d probably need to fine-tune sensitivity and add some delay or repeat checks in your scene to avoid false triggers. A wind sensor is still more accurate, but if you test it, try logging the tamper events first to see how consistent they are before linking it to retract the awning.
