HC2 -> Hc2

Question

Posted

As my HC2 backup is corrupt and I am not willing to send it over to Poland to let Fibaro try and fix it (full story see here:

I was thinking of buying a new HC2, then transfer all data/settings to the new one using the "Controller transfer" function. Then I can send my old and broken one to support and maybe sell it later as a used unit.

Would that work? Is this really a one-to-one copy? Do I need to add it forst as a secondary controller? How should I proceed?

This is mechanism of adding secondary controller as Z-wave describes it: you can send node ids etc to another controller, but configuration of devices, device they report to etc will stay the same. It is not transfer of everything: scenes, virtual devices etc will not be visible on secondary controller. So in your situation: you will be able to see Z-wave devices from old controller on new one, but to make them fully work you would need to reconfigure every one of them, change their associations to make them report to new controller and recreate all other devices.  And even then there are some devices that will keep try to communicate id 1 (so old controller) and there will be no other way than re-inclusion to make them work. This is how Z-wave enforces implementation of this function on z-wave certificated devices.

I transferred to domoticz as a test successfully... obviously devices need reconfiguring but it works fine.

Hi, I got it almost done:

First add new HC2 as secondary controller to old HC2. I dont know why but It was only way it worked for me.

1) Set old HC2 to learning mode

2) Push "add secondary controller"  from z-wave menu from new HC2 menu

3) After inclusin have finished push "Controller transfer" from old HC2 menu

Now it seems that devices have been transferred to new hc2 and they need reconfiguration. But the issue is that the new HC2 stays "slave" and old one is still master. How can I change this?

I would like to move devices from one hc2 to other and "destroy" the other hc2 completely so I could build up new system.

Any ideas?

I heard that you can actually clone the USB from old hc2 (using some clone software) to new usb of new hc2 and it would work. Aparently only the custom icons will be gone, but devices, scenes... will work as normal.

the company i work for is doing many things:

- backups from broken HC2
- backups from broken USB Sticks

- data migration to new hardware (HC2 replacement)

- firmware downgrade (any 4.xxx to any 4.xxx)

- USB Stick replacement

So yes, one can clone sticks, but those guys who did it (and posted information here and there), they have not recognized that cloning without pairing (AES256) and without proper serial number/disk name will break lot of internal Fibaro firmware functions, (not sure if i breaking NDA now, but let's give it a try) e.g. HC2 zwave firmware update (which runs during "each" firmware update).

So if you wish 100% working system after migration or data recovery, send the HC2 to Fibaro (poland) or us (germany).
