Fibaro Dimmer 2 and light goes off after less than 1 asecond

Question

Posted

I have one problem:
I tried to install the new dimmer 2.

Everything worked fine so far (inclusion, automatic detection).

I have two momentary switches. If I use one of them controlling light works fine.

I am having two light in a row (two lamps at different positions).

The dimmer 2 module is connected to L, N. The output of switch 1 is connected to S1 (the other switch is connected to the first switch via

Light 1 is connected to O, than to the second light and back to neutral.

(So phase is connected to L of the module and input to the switches, neutral lead to N and end of second light, output of switch is connected to S1 and this "O" from the module is connected to the first light)

Now the problem:

If I switch on the lights via app or web page it goes on to the dimming value I want.  but only for very short time (less than a second).

So it switches off directly.

If I repeat this it happens again. But after the third or fourth time the light stays on.

After switching it off again and waiting for a minute (I have not measured this) I can reproduce this behaviour.

What have I done wrong?

Any more details needed?

    Alex, give parameters

    1,2,5,6,7,8,14,30,31,32,33,34

    1: 5%

    2: 83%

    5: 1%

    6: 0.01s

    7: 1%

    8: 0.22s

14: Dimmer operates on auto-calibration settings

30: control mode selected automaticlally (based on auto-calibration)

    31: trailing-edge

    32: mode selected automatically

    33: Load recognized as dimmable

    34: no soft-start

Btw: Parameters 34 is detected different when I make a new calibaration, or soft-configuration or whatever (I cannot emeber), but I remember that I have seen the other two options selected also.

Btw I have meassured the voltage at my Gira switch. I have only an analog duspol but it said there is a low voltage below 6V.

Well with the parameter 34 we haven't noticed such behaviour. It seems that the device has got still calibration for incandescent.

Please set the parameter 34 to 1, save and after a while reload the advanced configuration page to ensure the value is set to 1.

After that do the same with parameter 13 setting it to 1, but remember about waiting for Dimmer to perform full calibration.

The soft reconfiguration is not the same as autocalibration. It reconfigures only the Z-wave part of the device.

In order to perform autocalibration you should set parameter 13 to 1 or use module B-button and select "blue" position.

    Please post here the results

Value 1 is "short soft start"?

    (It is how I wrote)

I have done it. Right now I have connected only one momentary switch and is is working (right now).

Only problem is that the bars on the web page are increasing to max and decreasing to the low limit I have set up very fast (it takes about 1.5 seconds), but at the end it is correct. The light itself stays at the right dimming level.

I will try all three switches this evening or tomorrow morning.

@Alex here is a link to a 230 V relay (coil & contact) that I've used for other projects:

Please login or register to see this link.

It's a printed circuit board type... I always solder my wires directly to save space.

I have found two problems in my wiring:

First was a defect wirefrom the first switch. I  had some load on it. Luckily I could replace it by another one (5-wiring cable and two wire have been useless so far).

The other one was two the other two switches.

They did not get their power from Sx but from the same phase the dimmer 2 did get it from.

I chnaged this and now the two other switches don't make any problem anymore.

So there is just this strange bar-wandering on the GUI left.

Alex, i'm glad that everything works now. About the flickering bar in HC2 I can't say much, never had same observations before.

Maybe you can describe it more when this occurs.

I was wrong. Too happy too early...

    To the last question:

    It is like this:

For example I want to dim the light to 25%. On the web user interface I press the first bar. The light was off before. The light dims up to 25% and stays there.

But the bar on this dimmer diagram goes up to 75% or 100% and down again to 25% (in about 1 second) and stays there.

Also my solution is not working perfect. I have to dim  up and down the light via web user interface two times (more or less) and then it is working).

Also I have just recognized that my scene is not working.

    An example:

Please login or register to see this code.

I have to start this three times until is sets the light (first nothing happens, than the light goes on and after 10ms off again and at the third time it stays there).
Than it is working. But if I have a longer break it does not work again.
If I remove the second and thirf switch from S1 everything is fine again.

So the effect stays the same

But I guess there is still a problem with the wiring.

If you remove the wires to S1,S2 and Sx, does it work again? I mean: reliable dimming, like doing a "fibaro:call(607, "setValue", 50);" really goes to 50 without overshoot or undershoot. If so, would it be possible to fit the relay I pointed to? Or is it too big?

I only have to remove the wires to the other two switches (or all of them) from S1. Than everything is fine with the light (except the bars-problem). LUA will work fine in this mode.

I am thinking about the relay. Firstly I wanted to try it without them.

I tried different combination and after setting parameter 34 to "no soft-start" and performing a full calibration the situation seems right.

    I will keep you informed.

I think the problem has something to do with Sx again.

Because the wire from Sx that goes to the second and third switch is also used as power source for other things (wall plug and another switch).

I think this might the problem.

I will try to connect these two switches to S2 (maybe this helps).

Or I will have to buy the relay petergebruers is talking about.

But I am still wondering how to stuff it into the in-wall box. I was lucky to be able to put the dimmer inside. It is really full.

    @petergebruers:

How would I connect the relay best? I would solder three wires to it and put shrink tubing in addition to each wire?

Indeed, Sx, S1 and S2 should all be floating. Although SX is at the same level as L, Sx should not carry current for other things.

Before you buy a relay, I'll make a drawing of the cabling as I understand it. Give me a minute.

I remember: The problem at this point was that the electrician did not understand my right at the beginning and separated the two switches upstairs with the one downstairs (the one downstairs did not exist at the beginning).

But I wanted to change light also when I am downstairs. That how it became so weird and confused.

I have to verify this but I think there is a 5-wire cable going from downstairs (where the dimmer is) to upstairs.

Phase, neutral, ground, and the two other ones. One of these is the result from the two switches upstairs. I am wondering right now what the fifth wire is.

If the fifth wire is unused... that could become your new Sx!

Yes that is what I am hoping now to be able to do.

But I cannot remember an unused fifth wire.

I will verify that this evening.

Last time it looked for me like a 4-wire cable, but I am sure that these kind of cable are not used normally (or even exist).

I will post the results later.

Here is my (admittedly crappy) drawing.

Thank you very much for the drawing!

    It comes very close.

The wires of the right side (where C and D is) are actually connected to the left side of the first "some distance" tube.

And #3 is connected at C.

So I will have to analyse the lost way of the fifth wire or buy the dimmer and connect it somehow (I understand the wiring diagram from you).

I've edited the drawing (in the previous drawing)... Is this second version correct?

Yes. I think is is exactly the current status of my wiring.
