Gate control, simple switch module?

Question

Posted
Hi All,

Seeking some advice from the group,

My gate setup has its own motion, pressure/resistance, open close, keyfob whatever logic built into it so I am not wanting to interfere with that. But I would like my Fibaro to know and trigger it to open and close in addition.

I've got the open and close sensing set up and working smoothly (Fibaro door sensor with this

and mounted). It works great, but does not help me when I see my gate is open and I am already at work...

So where I get stuck is trying to trigger open/close. A bit naively I bought the Fibaro Roller Shutter 2, but it seem to want to do everything my gate already does... and I can't see how to use it for my scenario.

The gate has a switch sensor input, and there is already a simple push button connected to it that goes back to the house so I can trigger the gate from inside. This is where I am thinking to connect a z-wave module. There is no power that should get pushed through here, just simply making a "connection" and it triggers my gate to open or close. I have Fibaro Relay switches but when I try to connect them like they are it means they would push 220v through to the gate sensor (!?) and I don't want to try that...

Does anyone have some hints for me? Can the Relay be wired differently (or another device) to achieve a simple "connection"?

From my descriptions I am sure it is clear I am not a pro in any way, and has to rely on manuals and documentation to get anywhere...

Cheers

Thor

@andyp you would first need to find out if the wires you'd be connecting to, to activate your gate are either a dry or wet connection. This will determine if you need a relay or switch. For my connection I'm using a relay, as it uses a dry connection to activate my door to my building.   I'd use a volt meter if I was you and attach it to the wire and press the button. It will tell you if it's dry or wet to help you figure out what you'll need, If your opening or closing a circuit to activate your gate.

The single switch 2 - 213 are not dry and the single relay 212 are dry.   For most situations as with mine, I'm using a single relay 212 switch because my connection is dry.

Thanks for the reply. It is a dry connection as I just need to close the connection between the two terminals on the gate control for it to operate, so I should use the 212 relay.

yes, the 212 is set with a default parameter of i believe 2.5 seconds, with is perfect for a door intercom.

Please take note, the relay is designed for operation indoor,  ambient temp 0 - 35... But if you install it in the house, you are probably going to need a 24 V connection between the house and the gate controller. It is mandatory in Belgium to use double insulated cable if you want to run that connection along mains wiring. If you're in doubt about the technical safety and/or the legal issues, please check with a qualified electrician in your country.... And please ask him about creepage and clearance...

Thanks Peter. I have decided to place it in the house. I currently have a intercom at the front door with a gate open button , which when pressed opens the gate, so I am looking to put the relay  into that circuit at house end. My electrician laid the cables and did the wiring at the gate during the remodel so I am legal, but thanks for the reminder.

I'm  using the Fibaro Roller/Shutter 2 for quit some years now to control my gates.

They are placed in a cabinet next to my gates and are they are exposed to temperatures from -10 C celsius up to +40 degrees  Celsius, and still working well!

The only exception is that I had to add an capacitor to the output of the  Fibaro Roller/Shutter 2 to prevent that they would burn out (as happened 2 times).....

But at the end they work fine.

But I have them defined as a Curtain instead of a gate; otherwise it doesn't work :(
