HC2 defect restore to new HC2

Question

Posted

Hi all,

I've got my second HC2, and i start testing. My HC is not defect, i just want to simulate this scenario.\

This test is about backup and restore in case of hardware fault of HC2.

What we do in case our HC2 die....we have backup stick, ok, and what we do whit that backup?

I made an backup on my home HC2 and then i try to restore to new HC2....no succes.

I insert backup stick from home HC2 in new unit, i made a factory reset and then update new HC2 to latest beta like home HC and hit restore.

SURPRISE.....Error

What i'm doing wrong. How can i restore my system to new HC in case my HC actual die?

As tinman says that's not the way. He knows, just believe it.

Anyway Fibaro should provide its customer with an official disaster recovery. Thats a basic tool any professional computerdevice should have.

I know is not officially buy I made this!

No matter what, I would still be interested in your current solution. A few months back my HC2 died... It took service a month to tell me that it was not possible to be repaired. I lost everything! At least some of the scenes I had copied somewhere. So if you have any solution for backup I will be happy to have it. M

No, I did end up with nothing, 'cos the service returned new (well there were some additional troubles) device. So no back up. I have started from blank, that is why I am interested in case this happens in the future... Obviously now, I will keep/or at least copy the USB backup. M

    Without backup you can't restore.

In future make monthly backup, you can use win32 to make this if you need a clone of backup stick.

For restore you need an old backup file, you no need original stick.

I made this test for me, I need to be prepared in case of something!

I understood Fibaro will provide a new backup system in near future, but until then I do old style :))

To restore on a new HC2, you not need a full clone. Simply copy the backups folder from recovery on a PC. After, when a day your HC2 craches and you have a second one, simply copy you backups directory on the recovery key of the new hc2. After that, on the new hc2, make a backup, it will update the list of backups available on the recovery key. And to finish, you simply restore the backup of your choice from the old HC2 which appears now in the list... You only loose icons...

Fibaro, if only your cloud save and other option with icon backup comes soon... Please.

And be sure you have same version of backup and actual HC2. Won’t work if different versions!

You are not alone. A friend who got into home automation because of my introduction to him hit the same when his Home Center crashes and after sending it back to Poland, for weeks we did not get any response/news on how are things. The final verdict was it was irreparable and my friend lost everything on it. Had to purchase a new Home Center (not a Lite this time as it has been problematic frequently) and I had to spend much time to re-do entire home automation up for him as he has no intention to pay for a fresh setup by the vendor again (few hundreds dollars).

This is how SCREW UP we, customer of Fibaro's Home Center are. The current back-up is as good as no back-up at all. More than a year of posting about it has resulted in no real solution from Fibaro yet. Always 'coming soon' and takes 1 or 2 or 3 years to be release, if ever. Take whatever is posted with a BIG BIG pinch of salt.

Honestly, I am on the verge of leaving the complex automation on z-wave and let nature takes its course. I am readying to invest on HomeKit for simple-automation and voice-assisted for the other half which is still pretty much manual now. At least HomeKit has given me precision positioning and automation based on positioning (e.g. when the last person leaves, or when the first person arrives), without draining the battery out of iPhones used by my household. At least HomeKit has given me voice-assisted control over lights/appliances which are still on manual control (e.g. turning on balcony lights only when I want to).

    Hi guys!

I'd like to inform you that we are developing better back up and restore system which may be a bit more complex than it is now. This prospective back up system will, among other improvements, be able to back up users' icons.

However, we still do not have its release date.

Good news that a new solution is being develop... Just hope it will not turn out to be another 2 years of wait and a crappy half-baked back-up method. We are now in an era of using technologies such as snapshots, 'data domain', de-duplication, encryption as data protection methods/approaches.

Do you have any more new on this? Is it only for HC2 owners or might HCL owners be blessed with some serious solution too?

....I'm also struggling with slow support on a broken HCL. Hardware needs replacing and apparently can't use my cloud backups on the new hardware. I still have the old unit that I can use (and take scenario screen shots from when programming the new unit) and could probably continue using it but every time I open the phone app I'm prompted to upgrade the software (which is what I'm unable to do = hw replacement).

Still struggling to accept the reality that there is no serious option from a company that has a high profile within Z-wave.
