HC2 defect restore to new HC2

Question

Posted

Hi all,

I've got my second HC2, and i start testing. My HC is not defect, i just want to simulate this scenario.\

This test is about backup and restore in case of hardware fault of HC2.

What we do in case our HC2 die....we have backup stick, ok, and what we do whit that backup?

I made an backup on my home HC2 and then i try to restore to new HC2....no succes.

I insert backup stick from home HC2 in new unit, i made a factory reset and then update new HC2 to latest beta like home HC and hit restore.

SURPRISE.....Error

What i'm doing wrong. How can i restore my system to new HC in case my HC actual die?

In fact, you can not.
Recovery stick is locked to your HC2 with a unique serial number so if it breaks, your backup is useless.

    @RH_Dreambox

    And what we do in case of HC fault?

    We need to make network again from scratch?

    @AutoFrank,

    now i have 2 HC2 fully configured, one has ip 192.168.1.50 and other has 192.168.1.131, they act as one,  if i turn on from 192.168.1.150 i can turn off from 192.168.1.150, they even send status of lights to each other.

    @Mediacut

    Do you mean that if you switch on a light with one hc2 ( .131) you can switch it off with the second hc2 (.150)

    If you add a new device or scene or virtual device how do you keep them in sync ?

    1. Yes turn on from one ip and turn of from other ip.

    2. if need to sync pull out backup from ip 1 and restore to ip 2. My test don't had this purpose, i just want to test scenario if one HC go down, how to restore to new unit.

    due to z-wave protocol specs (simplified said) you should never ever run two z-wave controllers with same nodeid (which you doing when both HC2s are on) as it might result in real disaster (mesh, devices doing not what they suppose to do, etc.).

    It was only a test to learn how to restore  from backup in case of a hazard.

    regards your tutorial (which probably will get deleted anyway), i can tell you following - as you can see from my signature, we doing HC2 repairs and we know how it works. All i can tell is "you almost there" with your findings (and if you ask me, it's ok to do whatever you wish to do with your HC2s, you bought them so what. But don't forget to mention the risk when posting "half done tutorials") but honestly you have no idea what you doing and what kind of security or dependency are behind the scenes. I will not mention the warranty situation, as you probably don't care about.

    I'm not trying to protect our repair service, to be honest we don't care about money (as the repair costs more than we get from customers). We started it to give customers an option to the "send back to Poland", and soon beeeep beeeep beeep (self-censored) ^^

    How I said, work for me like a charm!

    Of course who do this do on his risks. Here in Romania we don't have any Fibaro autorized service so we need do ourself.

    I want to be ready in case hardware crash.

    Tinman, almost? Fill in the blanks please.

    The lack of a good restore option to A fresh hc2 is really a pain.  Send it back to Poland for a week is not really Customer friendly.

    This restore procedure looks quit ok.

    I'd like to inform you that we are developing better back up and restore system which may be a bit more complex than it is now. This prospective back up system will, among other improvements, be able to back up users' icons.

    However, we still do not have its release date.

    Thanks for your response! good to hear and good for our night-rest.   Please also do a backup in the cloud option, like a apple iphone. The restore procedure on a apple iphone is a great example of a user friendly device replace option.

    Good to read that you are informing the community about future developments.

    That's good news!

    I'm very curious for this new feature!

    So I`m happy your happy, but Im only happy about that. Since I bought my first HC 1 year ago  my first question was how will I be able to create an image of my HC2 and how can I restore that to  new hardware, i learned the answers is NO.

    My first reaction was ok just another toy in smart home market. But I learned how powerful Fibaro system could be compared to rest of smart home market. I believe the only reason people accept there is no backup they are used to have intresting toys when talking of smart home.

    So FIBARO its the real first quest to solve, then you think about missing templates;)

    Just post a "YES" if you like Fibaro to work on this issue. Hope we gather some posts!

    As tinman says that's not the way. He knows, just believe it.

    Anyway Fibaro should provide its customer with an official disaster recovery. Thats a basic tool any professional computerdevice should have.
