[SOLVED]Device number reuse

knuth

Question

Having tested my new HC2 a while, I am now ready to install it in our new house. During testing several device numbers have been allocated, some still active, some "orphan" following delete/reinstall sequences. I now have two questions:

  1. When the maximum device/node number (node id = 232) has been reached, will HC2 automatically start assigning unused/orphan numbers from the top of the list? From other non-Fibaro forums, I have learned that some gateways do this, while others just stop at 232 and can go no further, even if several device numbers are unused. What about the HC2?
  2. I plan to do a "Reset Z-wave" before starting my real installation. This will delete all my test devices, which is fine. Will it also reset the numbering, making my next installed device number 2? Or will it still continue from the last device number I have used before reset?

It is a valid question. It might depend on firmware version, I bet someone from Fibaro or Fibaro support (maybe from Germany :-)) can give a detailed answer.

Before that, I'd like you to consider to make a small edit to your post, to avoid some confusion... Not that *you* are confused (I bet you are not, since you found that 232 number on other forums), but maybe other forum members are... I would not use the wording "device number" like that.

  • device id = the number you use is scenes = some 32 bit number so it is "unlimited" in practice. It is listed on the advanced page as "ID". I'm well above 1200 and some users have tested it for fun, if I remember, up to  > 4000.
  • node id = the number assigned to the physical device, for Z-Wave communication. Limited to 232 indeed. Not used in scenes (unless you really want to talk about node id). It is not used in code to turn on a lamp or so, or read a sensor. You can find it on the "advanced" page as "Node ID:132". I have 100 physical devices and 132 is the highest, so I'm still far away from that limit.
  • if you reset Z-Wave, it will indeed start at 2. I recommend you exclude all your devices before you do that.

  • Thanks, Peter, very useful. The distinction between device id and node id was indeed not clear to me. So maybe not totally confused, but still a novice ;). Your last bullet cleared my question # 2, making my question # 1 less pressing anyway. I will remain well below 232 physical devices.
