Bug with HC3 profile change

Question

Posted (edited)

Hello everyone,

I have opened a ticket within Fibaro support, but I'm also asking the community.

Everyday, a scene triggers à 06:00 to automatically switch from Night profile to Home profile. When it does, the HC3 freeze (scenes are not working until I reboot the gateway).

I tried to use both LUA or a Block scene, with the same issue :

Please login or register to see this code.

I also noticed that if I manually switch from night profile to home profile from the admin portal, it was working OK.

Anyone experiencing the same issue ?

@SmartHomeEddyOf course but when you sell this box to the general public, a lot of the buyers will expect that they can use the HC3 without having to dive into programming other than blocks and maybe a liitle bit of LUA.

It's like bringing your car to the dealer because it makes a strange noise: you will expect the dealer to tell you: come back this afternoon and we will check it out and repair it. NOT: "The fuel-injection has a higher flow-rate than normal and the airflow to the cilinders is not adjusted to to that, so open the 3rd and 4th cylinder and insert the flow-regulator 3 mm deeper".

What happens if you do it with the api?

api.post("/profiles/activeProfile/"..profile_id)

or with the swagger GUI?

Probably a very good answer but at the same time it exposes the fundamental problem of this forum.

@jguellec has the classification of 'Newbie'. If he really is, which I don't know, this answer will mean nothing to him because, like me, he does not know what an API is or a swagger...

This forum is for > 90 % used by programmers, amateur or professional, and their messages are absolutely 'Chinese' to real newbies. These newbies after some time leave the forum and don't come back because the answers they get don't help them because too complex for a newbie who doesn't know API , and maybe doesn't want to know...

Solution:

@A.Socha and others; make separate forums for beginners, intermediate and expert users. Anyone then can go wherever he feels most comfortable and upgrade after some time, or not...

@wienog

I understand your point but who will answer questions when experts will use different forum? Fibaro employees have only minimum participation in this forum :( and without people like @jgab @tinman @petergebruers @10der this forum could be closed :)

In turn, I understand your point also but nobody forbids the experts to have a look every now and then in the other forums and, when they find a topic that seems to be left unsolved by the newbies, interven and hand out a possible solution.
Point is that 90 % of newbie-questions can be solved by other newbies, as 90 % of expert questions can be solved by other experts.

Right now, we have a situation that new people come to this forum, ask a question (if they still dare after reading some of the topics), expect an answer like: "use that block and don't make it a triger and then..." and they get a well-meant answer of some expert who probably never ever used a block scene in his life.

And then they turn away thinking: "this  is not for me."

A (normal) car doesn’t have an API, doesn’t have a programming interface to act different. It only brings you from A to B.

The Homecentre is more like a racecar. You need a race license and specialized knowledge to drive it successfully. You can trim it to your needs and if you have enough money, you can hire all kind of experts to do that for you. Then you arrive on the circuit with only your racesuit and helmet.

However, to commute between home and work with a racecar doesn’t work either. And to win a race on Spa Francorchamps you don’t want to drive a normal car.

Which car do you drive?

Well, @SmartHomeEddy this might surprise you but most cardrievers drie a normal car and just expect it to bring them from A to B in more or less comfortable conditions. :-)

Most people don't want to drieve a racecar and if they do they leave the maintenance to specialized technicians.

What you are actually saying here is that people who just want to use blocks and maybe a bit of Lua should not buy the HC 3 ?

I had a discussion with A. Socha about this earlier: if you put the HC3 in the market as a B2B device, to be installed and programmed by 'certified' installers, that's OK of course, but then SAY SO and , maybe, make a separate version called HC3A (for HC3 for amateurs) and market that one for the general public.

No, please use blocks and a bit of Lua and perhaps be curious about other features.

Some cars do have an API, like the Tesla. And to use some cars, you do have to study a manual for driving modes, navigation, pushing buttons to park, save your chair setting, control air quality.

But you don’t have to use all of that to get from A to B, also on the Homecenter. But don’t expect the Homecenter to set a personal lap record on Spa Francorchamps below 2:30 minutes.

BTW I know @jguellec is not a newbe. It is only a counter on the posts.

    Hey guys,

First, thanks @jgab for your answer. I might be a newbie when it comes to programming (well, I’m definitely one), but I’m also a computer engineer, working for a (very) know IT company. So I guess I still have knowledge of what an API is and how to use it.

Take no offence @wienog but I don’t think amateurs/newbies will have a look at LUA or APIs… They use Block scenes, that’s built for this purpose (and that’s why I’ve started with the HCL before). Then if you’re curious, if you want to do better things, you’ll have a look at LUA and when you do, you’ll be VERY happy to get answers from all these guys here.

I sincerely thank you all, guys, because one day or another you’ve helped me solved a lot of things, directly or just by reading other comments you made on different posts, and you helped me grow and (probably) made me a better-newbie ^^ (thanks @SmartHomeEddy !)

That being said, I’ve just tried to api.post the profile and I get the same thing… gateway crashes and I have to reboot it... :(

    Absolutely no offense taken.

But my proposal stands: make three forums and when the newbie feels like being in the kindergarten in his 'Newbieforum', he can easily go up to the 'Intermediate' of 'expert' and start discussing things with the big boys.

In my case HC3 is far from important in my life, it does all what I want it to do with 240 devieces and > 100 scenes (Block and a bit of LUA :-) )  so I'm happy with the HC3 because now I CAN do anything I want WITHOUT API and alll the rest and that is a big improvement over the HC2.

    strange discussion,

the hc3 is for beginners (block scenes are easy enough) en for experts (lua etc)

On this forum you get the "newby"or "poweruser" below youre name depending at the amount of posts.

So someone with 4 post (newbie) can be an expert at lua and someone with lot's of posts (poweruser) can be a beginner with lua (like me)

    @akatar

Absolutely true, but my point was that too many experts in one forum scare off real newbies because they don't even begin to understand what 90 % of the posts here are talking about.

But, don't worry, the discussion has ended and everybody is happy. At least I am.

3 forums could be an idea, I don’t know ?‍♂️ In my (personal) case, if I had a “newbie” forum, I would probably never had a look at more ‘technical’ stuff, especially because, as you said, HC3 just needs to “do the work” and because we probably all have better things to do ))

I have played around with Block scenes too much (or whatever the name it was with the previous HCL), but I found a lot of limits (for my usage). Short example : @SmartHomeEddy helped me build a QuickApp to

Please login or register to see this link.

from the Seine river in Paris. Probably most of people do not care, but I’m living on an island in Paris, so that’s something I closely look at because I (also) have a little sport car in my underground garage and it can’t swim )) : that would have been impossible with Block scenes.

Anyway, since my car is safe in the garage, I had some time to play with the Profile change ? It seems that a scene (that is being reactivated with the Home profile) makes the HC3 crashes… I’ve successfully been able to change the Profile with that scene disabled… I’ll let the 06:00 scene triggers tomorrow morning to make sure the problem is solved.

BTW, I'm getting back to my (normal) (non-digital) life. Wish you all a beautiful day ✌️

well, you can place a fibaro water sensor in the underground garage :)

    Example:

i used the "buienradar" to see if rain is coming, but i placed a water sensor on my roof because "buienradar" is not always right and i want to know if it's raining.

So i had lot's of times that "buienradar" reported lots of rain and it was dry and vica versa

With a blockscene that blows up some balloons which are fitted on the car. And with the same water level API you can measure the water flow speed, so you know where your car is. Oh, you do need some Lua for that ?

I loved Buienradar, it's such an ingenious piece of programming (at least for me) but, indeed, it lacks some precision, at least in the first version that I downloaded.

You see, I DO want to use API etc, but only if it has been made by others :-)

And that is a wake-up call forall you guys to put more of your work in the downloadsection.

? there is a Buienradar Rain update, with more insight of the rainforecast. ?

    @SmartHomeEddy @akatar @jguellec @petrkl12

One last remark, why don't you guys follow the example of Homeseer where multiple (more than 60 or 70) so-called 'plugins' are available in the download section for a PRICE, mostly around 29.99 €.

So why don't you guys upload all kinds of QA's and connections with other systems and put them in a -still to be opened- non-free part of the download section ?

That way you have the honor and pride you deserve when you see how many HC3-owners downloaded your piece of heaven AND you can have a nice dinner with your wife or husband evry now and then...

i did it for my things here ->

Please login or register to see this link.

There is planed paid section in Fibaro Marketplace.

I still post some solutions for free, but as you said, to be able to pay nice dinner is not bad idea at all, the time spend is much more worth
