Quickapp notifications tab, when would a device be unavailable?

There is a tab in the QA called Notification where i can check a box to receive a notification if the device is unavailable. 

What conditions does the HC3 see to make this QA unavailable? I have changed the ip address to the device it is controlling so i get an error back stating "no  route to host" but this doesn't trigger the notification. 

what variable or command does HC3 need to see to trigger this? 

 

Yes i can do this with a scene but there is functionality written there for some reason.

You need to program this yourself and decide when device is not working.
Notification is triggered on "dead" property value (bool) in API for this device.

So in "pseudo-code":

if checkIfDeviceIsDead()
self:updateProperty("dead", true)
else
self:updateProperty("dead", false)
end
