High CPU causes lock-up

Question

Posted

How can I find out what is causing this?  It started happening every couple of weeks, now daily.  Can be 1, 2, 3 or all 4 cores at 100%, everything freezes and I have no choice but to reboot.   I haven't made any changes to the system for ages but this has come from nowhere and is annoying to say the least!

First make some backups. Maybe update your firmware. Which version are you running?

That sounds strange, but I don’t have an explanation for that.

To start working to a solution, maybe first make some good backups, then update to the latest firmware version. Then lets see…

Ok @SmartHomeEddy, that's my weekend challenge right there...

So the upgrade to 5.190.29 seems to have made no difference.   I am having t reboot daily, with 1, 2 or 3 cores stuck at 100% and everything grinding to a halt.  What could suddenly start this behaviour after over nearly two years of running ok?

Could be anything. Maybe a z-wave device is spamming your network. You could check your z-wave diagnostics if there are any high values.

Otherwise start stopping quickapps and scenes. Not all quickapps respond correct on disabling them, it depends on how they are build. Scenes can be turned off.

OK. When you say z-wave high values could you clarify what I'm looking for here?

    Like this example:

The first device 19 has a higher hourly frame rate 215. (In this case it is meant to be so, but as an example).

Ok thanks.  I found one switch device with a frames/hour of over 7000. I assume this is not good..?

oeilala, that is a lot. What is it for kind of device? Could is have any purpose to have it transfer some status that much?

You could disable the device for some time and see how your HC3 performs.

Hi @SmartHomeEddy   It is only a Fibaro double switch.   I'm not sure where this setting/parameter is to change it?   I will temporarily disable as you suggest.

7000 reports every hours means almost 2 reports per second. That is a lot. I hope with disableing the device, you will see it in the performance of your HC3. (Ofcourse it still could be something else, or a second cause.)

Maybe you could compare the parameters of the device with the parameters of another double switch, if you have a second one. Maybe you see differences with a second one that doesn’t spams your network. Every parameter with the word “report” in it, is a suspect.

Update for @SmartHomeEddy.  I've had a week with no lock-ups since disabling the this switch.  Comparing  parameters I see the energy reports are set at zero, but I read on here there is a firmware issue associated with this switch which maybe the cause of the excessive reports.  Thanks for your help
