Android App - Unable to connect remotely after local access

Question

I'm facing a very strange issue with remote connection on Android app which drives me crazy from over a month. I have several Android phones which all behave in similar manner:

HTC One M8s, Samsung Galaxy S6 both on Android 6

HTC One M7 on Android 5

The problem is that remote connection will not work anymore AFTER a successfully local connection, failing with "Invalid login or password" message. There are 2 situations:

1. Install the app while connected to LAN. It will connect locally, but it will NOT connect remotely after that

2. Install the app while on mobile network. It will connect remotely and stay on remote connection even when connected to LAN. As soon as the Settings/Choose HC is opened, a toast pops: HC IP address updated, and after that no more remote connection is possible

Obviously the problem is not in the configuration of remote access because the app can connect remotely.

I used an app to sniff the requests made by the app and here comes the strange thing: While in mobile network (or other network), the app make a request to dom.fibaro.com which is successful, but after that, for some reason, it will try to login to the LOCAL IP (192.168.1.200) while on foreign network, which, of course fails. The above happens only after a successful local access (that is, after the IP update thing).

I used to stay on remote to circumvent this problem, but since I added 2 cameras to the system this is no longer feasible.

I'm beginning to be put in a position more and more when I want to replace this Fibaro for something that works, looks modern in its app etc. and actually works with all the latest products without having to wait for custom virtual devices and templates that are never created by Fibaro.

Fibaro needs a make over and then needs to begin working with more suppliers to ensure proper support for the IFTTT devices out there.

For the price I paid, I'm feeling short changed.

I now also have the same issue.

When I first install the app over WiFi at home, it finds the HC2 and the remote login and hc2 login works fine. But it logs me in as "Remote" even though I am on the LAN. I entered the IP address of the HC2, but still only "Remote" access. Can not get "Local" access.

So I then switch off the WiFi on my phone and try and login. Straight away I get Invalid login. I remove the HC2 and try and manually add it over Mobile network and remote login works, but cannot connect to the HC2 box. I get the Invalid Login.

I have a Nexus 5 running CM14 nightly build.

It did work on my Nexus 5 running Stock Android 6 but this device is gone now and not coming back.

Fibaro can you help?

Update:

I reinstalled the app, now I can get local access on the LAN, but the problem with remote access is still there. Switching off WiFi causes the invalid login can NOT find any HC2.

Hello,

What Android app version do you use? Do you have the latest one?

@DinoKustas, you are another person that does not take into consideration the fact that when it comes to integration there are two sides: FIBARO and 3rd party manufacturer. In order to integrate a device both sides has to agree and cooperate. If you think other manufactures are very keen to reveal their know-how to anyone then I have no further explanation for you. Moreover, very few of other manufactures even have forums where you can post or ask questions. We do our best to integrate devices that are not ours but it takes time and human resources.

Hi,

I have the latest app version 1.11.0.1

Also as above I noticed something strange when I joined my work WiFi network with my phone. The app worked, logged me in as remote. My work WiFi is obviously not aware of my HC2 and they are separated by about 20 miles.  It appears that the app works as long as its connected to WiFi, As soon as I turn off WiFi and use Mobile data it does not recognise the login to the HC2 box, either at work or at home. I have removed and reinstalled the app a few times and the behaviour is consistent in that it does not work on Mobile Data.I have used my normal remote useername and password, which is accepted on WiFi and Mobile data. The next username and passwords to the HC2 are only accepted on WiFi and not on mobile data. I have tried different user accounts including my admin account and they all work on WiFi but not on Mobile data.

All other apps work just fine and Phone OS is running Android 7.1 CyanogenMod 14.1-20161206-NIGHTLY-hammerhead

Ok, I gave up on the whole CyanogenMod and restored my Nexus 5 back to stock Android 6.0.1. There is still an issue with resolving connections. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app 3 times but the following issue still remains:

  • I am now able to switch between WiFi and Mobile data without an issue. But on both connections I can only connect as "Remote".
  • When go into Settings>Choose HC it does not set the IP address of my HC2 automatically.
  • If I select Edit and manually enter the IP address then it accepts it and the house symbol shows the IP address and and shows the LAN icon. But when I come out of the screen and restart the app it still only connects as remote.
  • I have also tried too leave the app, not uninstall it and and delete the app data and reload the app. I enter all the login information, and then got  to the Settings>Choose HC screen. Still no luck, the app does not detect the local IP address of the Fibaro HC2 box. Again, manual entered IP address is ignored and I can only connect as Remote.

My phone is a standard Nexus 5 using the current stock android (6.0.1) from google, I have the latest Fibaro app from the Play Store. I should be able to access the HC2 locally if I am on the same LAN.

UPDATE:

Issue now resolved. Connection to local restored after rebooting router and HC2, clearing app data, restarting app on Phone, logging in again from the app, going to Settings>Choose HC and it picks up the IP address automatically. Switch off WiFi, goes to remote access, Switching WiFi on still holds remote access, while app is open in the background, I have restart the app to get local access. I can live with that.

I think you've taken a bit more offense than I had intended there. Apologies if you took it the wrong way.

I appreciate not everyone wants to work together, but when you have the likes of Domoticz coming up with plugins etc. on a regular basis it gets a bit frustrating, especially given the price.

Throw into the bag the connectivity issues and well, one bothered user. :)

Hi,

Is the downtime today related to looking into the 3G/4G issues by any chance? :)

Hello,

Is it true that everyone who face this issue has a smartphone in Vodafone network?

Can you perform a test using your smartphone but another service provider simcard?

@DinoKustas, we do not underestimate or neglect opinions of our users, no worries about that :-) But, at the same time, we feel obliged to explain the process of integrating 3rd parties products to our system.

@dowoco, thank you for your feedback, I'll inform the team. Are you using Vodafone network?

I'm on Vodafone also, i found a way to solve this issue.

Go into Settings => Choose HC and instead of the local ip, I added the dyn dns with the forwarded server port.

    seems to work for me.

L.E HC2 is on a RDS provider network, so dyn dns is free
