Question

Posted

Hi,

I have a few spare unused Roller Shutter 3.

Can I use them as a Single Switch to operate Solenoid Valves which have a magnetic coil which energise and de-energise to open and close?

If so, any specific settings  need to be adjusted?

Thanks.

@Stephen P

Try to check the product specifications, instructions or just search the forum... just to be polite.

Especially when this is answered a couple of lines below

    Hi  @Martin_N

Thanks for your reply. Yes I had actually searched for this but had failed to get any results although I was sure that someone or the other must have asked this question before.
I also have gone through the specifications and the manual and already use the RS3 for several shutters in my apartment. However, the reason for my asking was because I have three brand new RS3 which I cannot use elsewhere and I thought I may be able to use it for my purpose which is not actually to light up a lamp but I need it for activating a solenoid coil for about 60 to 120 seconds operation each time. According to previously answered question above, it appears that the switch can be put on for 900 secs. I have tested this practically and find that the switch actually comes on for about 1 to 2 seconds.
Anyway, I have already managed to order a SIngle Switch2 ( which appears to be in shortage in Europe ) for the time being and will investigate further how the RS3 can be used to serve my purpose.

This is a very specific purpose and may not be of any use to others generally I think.

Thanks once again for the link that you provided of the previously answered similar query.

    Hello,

.. ok, I'll try to be less snarky now :)

And I'll be happy if you play with it and write the results. Unfortunately, I don't have a free RS3 at my disposal, so I'm going by experience and the manual.

I assume that you have RS3 set to the default settings, i.e. parameter 151 = 1 – roller blind (with positioning).

Then the short course depends on several other factors and these are:

    - 150 calibration (if it did not pass, the up 156/down 157 times were recorded, but you will still edit them depending on the required timeout for the run)

    - 155 engine running detection (standard 10W, can be adjusted) But I think that the solenoid will not even reach 3W, so you either set the measured wattage, or write 0 and then it will not be taken into account.

    - 154 motor delay after reaching end position (set to 0 again)

Perhaps setting parameter 151 to will solve the whole thing

    3 – gate (without positioning).

Then look in the manual for the connection of the "limit switches", other parameters 152, 154 refer to this.

Maybe there will also be an option to set 151 to

6 – roller blind with built-in driver (impulse)

If you want to test, I would also be happy for others if you write the results and thus contribute valuable information to the community.

    eM.

    Hi

Thanks a lot for this lead.🙂

I will definitely test in various ways and write the results once I achieve something definite.

    Thanks once again!

    Cheers.

    Hello again,

First and foremost, I must admit that when I asked my initial question, I blindly ( and wrongly ) presumed that I am asking in a community which will simply understand what I required. But this was my mistake and I do apologise.

What I mean by above is that I do not use a Fibaro Home Centre as a Hub ( I had forgotten to mention that)  but rather I use Hubitat hub although almost all of my Z Wave / Zigbee devices are Fibaro modules.

However, coming back to my original question and my plans to play around with the parameters 151, 156, 157 etc did not work  because these parameters are not accessible in the Hubitat hub interface although there may be ways by sending Z Wave commands through the Interface ( This is a more advanced stuff for me ).

On the other hand, I have found a simple solution (for the time being) to operate the RS3 as a switch -  although this may not be the same for the Home Centre users. All the  same, I am including it here just in case anyone finds it helpful.

This procedure is for an Hubitat hub using an RS3 : I connected the Solenoid coil to the RS3 in question  at the Q2 terminal and loaded a Generic Z Wave driver for roller blinds and then I used the interface of the Generic driver to operate the  RS3 as a Switch; I found that the "Start Level Change" and "Stop Level Change" icons on the interface  can operate the RS3 as a switch. So for the time being this a a solution - but there may be other ways too.

Note : Tried uploading the screenshot of what I described above but the site gives and Error each time so the screenshot is not available in this post.

    FURTHER UPDATE

This again is for non-Home Centre hub.
After my last update above, finally I was able to carry parameter settings using a Basic Z Wave Tool provided in the Hubitat list of built in Drivers.

With this I was able to send configuration settings of 156, 157 etc one at a time. This I was able to set the Timing of Parameter 156 to 60 seconds which is sufficient for my specific use. However they can be set to higher values as needed.

Now I am able to use the RS3 as a Single Switch and it serves my purpose.
