[INFO] Enabling Native Alexa skill for Sonos

Question

Hi Forum,

The native skill for sonos is now available :-)

from Sonos

Quote

Now in Open Beta, wirelessly connect all of your Sonos speakers to any Amazon Alexa enabled device, like the Echo or Echo Dot, then just ask for the music you love. Blend the great sound and multi-room listening of Sonos with the convenient voice control of Amazon Alexa. Just enable this skill and you’ve got quick, hands-free control of your favorite music and more. Currently, you'll need to say the name of the room when you start music or control the volume. "Alexa, play jazz in the living room." "Alexa, turn up the volume in the kitchen." This is temporary, and will improve throughout the beta.

There are also updates for the system and for all the controller platforms (android, desktop, iOS)

To enable the skill you will need a Sonos account which you should have created with the last Sonos update.

Log into your Alexa account and find the and enable the Sonos Skill

This will redirect you to you Sonos account to get your permission to link to your sonos system

You will then be redirected back to the alexa account to discover your sonos devices

after discovery you will see the list of players

Once they release the Google Assistant to the Sonos One model, I'll be picking up two of these suckers!  I have been wanting to add a pair of speakers to my Sonos soundbar and sub for months, but I didn't liked the fact they weren't integrated with a voice Assistant. Let alone the Google Assistant... Looks like I'll be waiting a few more months though....

From https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/10/hands-on-the-sonos-one-is-a-smarter-play1-with-alexa-support/

The company said those who already have a Sonos speaker will gain Alexa support through an update rolling out on Wednesday as well, though you'll have to own an existing Alexa-enabled device such as Amazon's Echo Dot and use Alexa's Sonos "skill" to make that work. The Sonos One's advantage is that it has everything baked in from the get-go.

One important information - Calling and Drop In functions doesn't work for Sonos One.

Calling and Drop In are Echo exclusives, Alexa enabled devices (like Sonos) do not have this ability.

I wanted earlier to sell my ordinary Sonos and buy Sonos One, but now I prefer my old Sonos + echo dot.
