I started off the whole home automation quite some time back, using DECT switches together with my Fritz box. Noticed very soon that this is limitted but was reliable and no issues what so ever.

Not digging too much into the details I purchased the devolo z-wave kit to start with was working great but without internet no modifications possible, so I started to really dig into the details and ended up with Fibaro. Cool and easy to use interface for block scenes and worked fine until the crashes started to appear on a regular basis. Looked around again and played around with raspi based systems. OK, all really good products, but the ones being really good are not really suitable for end users. Unfortunately still from linux nerds for linux nerds ;-). I learned a lot about linux but why do I have to manually edit a file, adding room names? I do not really understand. For sure ideal as with a simple power bank the UPS is solved too and so far worked all reliable. Started to look again and played around with Vera plus. A really nice system, having all on board and is price wise very interesting. The user interface is however far from usable and a usable interface creates monthly costs.

So for the time being I stick to fibaro and hope the stability issues get solved soon before adding new features.
