Fibaro Dimmer 2 and light goes off after less than 1 asecond

Question

Posted

I have one problem:
I tried to install the new dimmer 2.

Everything worked fine so far (inclusion, automatic detection).

I have two momentary switches. If I use one of them controlling light works fine.

I am having two light in a row (two lamps at different positions).

The dimmer 2 module is connected to L, N. The output of switch 1 is connected to S1 (the other switch is connected to the first switch via

Light 1 is connected to O, than to the second light and back to neutral.

(So phase is connected to L of the module and input to the switches, neutral lead to N and end of second light, output of switch is connected to S1 and this "O" from the module is connected to the first light)

Now the problem:

If I switch on the lights via app or web page it goes on to the dimming value I want.  but only for very short time (less than a second).

So it switches off directly.

If I repeat this it happens again. But after the third or fourth time the light stays on.

After switching it off again and waiting for a minute (I have not measured this) I can reproduce this behaviour.

What have I done wrong?

Any more details needed?

Unfortunately I bought dimmers for my refurbished apartment in two batches – and the second batch is all Dimmer 2.

All Dimmer 2 have the same exact behavior described here – they do not work when run out of web or mobile app until 2nd or 3rd attempt, which makes them useless from scene or ALL ON commands perspective.

Let's try to find a solution.

What's the load (Brand, Watt, Type)? Does it use a transformer or power supply?

How many switches have you got connected to S1 (in parallel)?

Have you tried parameter 6 = 3 and/or parameter 23 = 1?

Have you connected bypass 1 or other devices (resistors, capacitors)?

Could you please tell us the values of parameters 1,2,5,6,7,8,14,30,31,32,33,34 because they tell a lot about the configuration of the dimmer and the load.

Config values from one of  the modules:

1: 11
2: 79
5: 1
6: 1
7:1
8: 5
14: 1
30: 2
31: 1
32: 2
33: 0
34: 1

Unfortunately it is not particularly practical to directly connect the modules right now with short cables - they're under floorboards.

I have exactly the same problem. Light turns off 3 times when turning on with the app.

I'm using a non-dimmable LED.

After the 4th time, it works fine... till switching off for one minute

for me there is no difference using led lights or hallogen 75W, both have this problem and the disco effect

Hi,

I have the same issues as described here:

  • Dimmer 2.
  • Circuits with 2 or 3 momentary switches with around 10m of cable run between them.
  • Momentary switches connected in to S1.
  • Turn the Dimmer on in the web interface, lights turn on for around 1 second, then turn off again.
  • Using 7W GU10 LED's from Megaman
  • Had no issues with the original Dimmer 1

Any updates from Fibaro?

I understand. So your values mean:

1: 11 - typical minimum brightness

2: 79 - typical maximum brightness

5: 1 - default dimming step auto

6: 1 - default timing step auto

7:1 - default dimming step manual

8: 5 - default timing step manual

14: 1 - Running on autocal

30: 2 - no forced edge mode

31: 1 - trailing edge, typical for LED

32: 2 - no forced on-off mode

33: 0 - load is dimmable

34: 1 - soft start 0.1 sec

These are sane values. I can recommend you to experiment with a change of one or more parameters:

p 6 (time of a dimming step) set to 3, 4 or 5

p 34 (soft start) set to 2 (0.5 sec)

p 23 (double click) set to 0 = disable

Or a combination of these parameters.

Sure, I will do. It may take some time, as I'll run some control tests beforehand (both warm bulbs and cold).

The support re-connected to my box this afternoon and made a lot of tests.

In my case, it seems that setting the parameter 6 to 0.03s solved the auto turn off bug.

I replicated this solution to the other fgd 212 having the problem and it solved it also.

Alex, please give a try and tell us if it fixes the bug for you also

Update:

Setting parameter 6 to 0.03s only reduces the problem but doesn't eliminate it.

In 80% of the cases, the remote turn on works, that's better than 0%... but still around 20% fail... it's not acceptable for me.

On the other hand, the support said that I have to install bypass 2 (and buy them

I will wait until bypass 2 are available, test them and if it's not ok, i will ask for reimbursement and buy Qubino dimmers who are not perfect either but far less annoyments than those (in my installation at least)

Results So far:

With No Changes - Warm Bulbs - Issue not present

With No Changes - Cold Bulbs - Issue occurs ~ 60% of the time. On the second attempt, the lights stay on.

With param 34 set to 2 - no change from cold.

I'll experiment with parameter 6

what do you mean with no change from cold ? working or not working ?

I think he means that it makes no difference if he changes parameter 34. Cold Bulbs still have this issue (so it is at least at my place).

Correct, with parameter set to 34, the issue still occurs, with cold bulbs.

I've updated param 6 to 3 - I'll observe over the next day or two.

Here another one with the same problem.

    Still no solution?

@wesselvvvb all I've been told by Fibaro so far is to set parameter 6 to 0.03 (the default is 0.01).

It helps in some of my circuits but not a 100% fix

I agree with reading123. You can try higher values too, but I doubt that will solve it completely (plus makes it dim very slowly).

As far as I know Fibaro was able to reproduce the issue and will report back next week.

OK today I installed dimmer2 and got experienced similar issues. I have simple configuration, 1 momentary switch attached directly to dimmer (S1-Sx) and simple 60W light bulb. When I use double click, or application to set the max brightnes level, dimmer turns off and after a while turns on and repeat this 3 times. I thought that it might be overload protection, but the bulb is 60 w only (philips) and power reading shows the similar values.

When I setup the level to 70%, everything is OK, but the light is dimmed. If I need full power, its not possible with dimmer2. Regular dimmers work without any issue.

I tried to disable all the self calibration settings but no change. Also parameter 6 didn't help. I increased the parameter 39 to max, but no success. It seems like dimmer thinks it overloaded and turns off itself.

Only "success" is when I use leading edge settings. I can go way to 100%, but the light is obviously not at 100% (only on 51watts and noticeable lower light).

Another test with different light bulb. Used 60w halogen instead of regular old fashioned one and it works without problems stated above. Strange, obviously is dimmer 2 more sensitive to this.

I did some tests and I am inclined to think that the effect you have, happens because of signals appearing on S1 (via cable). It's not "self protection", not with that kind of load. If I am right, the effect disappears if you disconnect the cable on S1. I merely suggest that you might give that a try. Just to confirm that it isn't something else.

Did the test with S1-Sx disconnected - only control over the web interface. No change in behaviour.
